The Namaqua Sandgrouse

DSC_0029

The Namaqua Sandgrouse is one of the most adept birds living in the Southern African deserts. Aside from its amazing camouflage which blends perfectly with the desert soil, it has another SpongeBob-type absorbent talent. To provide water to their flightless young, these birds fly for miles to a water source, soak their feathers in water, fly back to the nest and drip the now cold (from the flight) water into the chick’s mouths.
